At 9:00 am this morning, I got to hear a pep talk. Most of my Saturdays don’t begin that way. But this was just what I needed.
I’m a tutor with Whiz Kids, one of our ministry partners through Confluence Ministries. This year we’ve been tutoring on Zoom. It’s been different, not all bad or good. But it’s certainly allowed relationships to continue or grow. This morning’s pep talk was a zoom call for tutors. The guest speaker was Shawn DeBerry Johnson. She’s preached at God’s Grace before. She’s active in the community, with her faith and serves in the office of Denver Mayor Michael Hancock. She’s a dynamic speaker and a voice of God.
DeBerry Johnson acknowledged that 2020 was a challenge. But led off with this: “Here we grow again!” And,
“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”Neal Donal Walsch
It was a great presentation that encouraged, affirmed and challenged us to take courage and be committed. She led us to hear God’s Word and continue on a journey of excellence.
This week it seemed the journey of excellence in our country took a big detour. Pastor Dave led us through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount Wednesday evening at The Well. A few of Jesus’ words came back to me as I listened to DeBerry Johnson.
“You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule. "You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought. “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat. “You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being ‘care-full,’ you find yourselves cared for. “You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world. “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family. Matthew 5:2-9 Msg
When we’re at the end of our rope, at the end of our comfort zone, at the end of our hope…that’s when God is ready to lead us on the journey to join Jesus in his mercy to change me, we and the world. It’s scary and it’s messy, but Jesus promises to be with us always.
We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 10:00 am MST as we gather to worship and share this Good News that God is with us.
Grace be with you,
