Jesus' Mercy Changes Me, We and the World

Off Track?

Dear Children of God,

In the movie “Days of Thunder,” Tom Cruise plays Cole Trickle, a maverick stockcar driver who seems immune to risk and takes a lot of reckless chances. He is seriously injured. His girlfriend is a doctor and she asks him what drives him to keep racing. Why would he take such risks? His reply speaks to me:

“I am more afraid of being nothing than I am being hurt.”  Cole Trickle

We are all somebody! We are all children of God made in God’s image, standing on the foundation of reality that the Creator made you and me the apple of God’s eye.  We need to strive, of course , but to strive for the right thing! Consider this: if we believe that outward success determines our worth; that who we know is more important than whose we are, that appearance is more important than substance; that the end justifies the means ; that we must make decisions out of self-interest to take care of ourselves or no one else will; that we must deny our failures and hide our weaknesses to maintain an image of strength; that we can forget the future because the survival now is the name of the game; that we can use whatever power we have for our own sakes, because that is what power is for—to feather our own nest; that if we do not dominate, we will be losers…..Friends if we lean into any parcel of this, we are off track! We need a change of direction.

When Karl Barth, the greatest theologian of the 20th century was asked, ”What is your theological foundation? he said, ”Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so!  (From Barry Johnson, ”Choosing Hope” -Nashville Abingdon Press ,1988, page 18)

For further reflection read : Genesis 25:19-31, and Matthew 13:1-23.

Prayers: For Spiritual Formation to come to all that grounds our identity in Christ Jesus.
