Jesus' Mercy Changes Me, We and the World

Fully Known and Loved

Many years ago, over the course of about two years, several homes exploded due to natural gas leaks in my Dad’s hometown.  My Grandfather was killed in one of these explosions after natural gas flowed down from his attic until it reached the pilot light on his stove. The cause of all the explosions was found to be due to gas pipes that were laid incorrectly by the city. A judge determined my Grandfather’s life was worth about $40,000.  I was therefore interested when after 9/11, a Victim Compensation Fund was set up and President Bush appointed Kenneth Feinberg to head it up to determine the worth of every person killed that day (a movie was recently made about it called “Worth” where Michael Keaton plays Feinberg). Feinberg had the unenviable task of determining the worth of almost 3,000 victims which included everyone from children to CEOs and settling with their beneficiaries.

Thankfully, scripture teaches us that we are worth far more than an algorithm-generated check from the federal government.

We are valuable, worthy, and precious to God. We are and always have been, fully known and fully loved by an all-loving God. The Bible says God created us in his own image and that God so loved us that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. Therefore, in God’s eyes we are priceless.

1 Peter 3:3-4  “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
