Late in her life, the great Catholic social worker Dorothy Day said, “If I have achieved anything in my life, it is because I have not been embarrassed to talk about God.” -Thomas G. Long, “Testimony: Talking Ourselves into Being Christian”
On Sunday we will celebrate Pentecost. The day of the Holy Spirit’s coming among us. “The Holy Spirit poured out gifts upon all people on that day, …visions….and …dreams…men and women will prophesy (speak of the Lord)…” Acts 2:14-21
There was this East Indian Jesuit named Tony de Mello who used to tell a story about disciples gathered around their master, asking her endless questions about God. And the master said that anything we say about God is just words, because God is unknowable. One disciple asked,”Then why do you speak of God at all?”
The Master replied, ”Why does the bird sing? She sings not because she has a statement but because she has a song.” -Anne Lamott, quoted in “Testimony: Talking Ourselves into Being Christian,” by Thomas G. Long
This Pentecost, let us pray for the words God would have us sing.
