Jesus' Mercy Changes Me, We and the World

Celebrating Differently

It’s a holiday: the fourth of July. Celebrating the birth of our nation may look a little different this year. No parades, no festivals, no large cookouts or picnics, no fireworks. And maybe, some reflection on what is actually celebrated.

In 1776, not all people were considered equal or for that matter even people. This year we have an opportunity to consider the ways in which the country was founded on the backs of enslaved people. We have the opportunity to listen, learn and see the harm that was done and invite and welcome new ideas to put aside systems that need to be changed. Because we believe these words in Galatians 3:28 are true:

There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

And, Hebrews 13:8:

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

May we celebrate July 4th by being willing to tell the truth about our history and willing to work to make these words be true: “All Men [and women] are created equal…endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

Have a fun day celebrating freedom and Pastor Dave’s birthday. We’ll see you tomorrow as we gather at 10:00 am via the stream. It won’t be the same without you.

Grace be with you,
